Karen began her volunteer journey when she was a child inspired by the brilliant work, her grandparents did. “They always did something; they were hugely into the volunteering side of things.” Karen remembers as a young girl helping at flag days for the ‘Lourdes Invalid Fund’ a cause her grandparents regularly supported. In her later teen years, she volunteered with an organisation called ‘Friedreich Ataxia’. She did this for 9 years and would support the members of the organisation to be able to go on holidays as well as social events they had.
Read MoreWhen I spoke to Ian about his motivation for volunteering, he told me “You can either sit at home watching your television giving out about the world or you can actually do something about it.” Ian shared with me his fantastic idea for when he is out walking his dog. He walks the dog and does a bit of litter picking at the same time. “The dog needs walking every day and on these long evenings I just bring my litter pick and a bag and pick up litter on the way.” Ian finds this a great way to keep his local area clean and take pride in his community.

Riyadh is motivated to volunteer by his beliefs, “I believe that God has created us to help each other.” Riyadh feels that at times that he has needed help or support people have offered him that and it is important for him to offer help and support to people through volunteering to repay this kindness.

Paul has an underlying condition that left him very unwell and unable to work for several years. Paul found volunteering a good way to motivate him to get back out there. “It’s a reason to get out of bed, for a long time I didn’t have a reason to leave the house.”
