“I strongly feel that everyone should volunteer. If you have the capacity and the time you should do it.”
Katy Curran has just organised a massively successful event; Wellféis in aid of SOSAD. Katy got involved with the SOSAD fundraising committee after registering her interest through Louth Volunteer centre back last year and has been a major asset to SOSAD ever since.
Katy is no stranger to volunteering and has been a very active volunteer for many years now. Several years ago, Katy sadly loss her brother and because of this decided to run a fundraising event in aid of the Irish heart foundation. Katy was inspired by the people that gave up their time and supported her in this fundraiser and was keen to do more volunteering afterwards. ‘Loads of people helped out and were really kind’. She knew then that it was something she wanted to do and wanted to give back to her community.
Katy has witnessed first-hand the important role volunteers play in supporting organisation particularly the small local organisations. ‘These type of things run on volunteers, that’s how they manage.’ Her proudest moment while volunteering was creating Wellféis which recently raised much needed funds for local organisation SOSAD. Katy came up with the idea for the event and saw it through to completion.
On a personal level Katy has gained so much through the process of volunteering. It has allowed her the opportunity to learn a new skill set which will aid her in her professional career in the future. More importantly, she feels that she has made connections with people within her community that she may not have met otherwise, and she has now made ‘actual friendships that will go on after the event’.
Katy has been very appreciative of the support that Louth Volunteer centre has offered her and supported her throughout her journey since she registered back in 2018. She would recommend that people get in contact with their local volunteer centre and see what volunteer opportunities are out there. Katy said, ‘the website is great, you can search by county and see what is available and they always check in with you to see how you’re getting on’. Katy found her role with SOSAD on the fundraising committee though Louth Volunteer Centre and has loved being a part of it as much as the organisation has valued and appreciated her support and effort.
Katy would encourage everyone to get out there, get volunteering and have fun doing it; ‘it’s fun, it’s rewarding and you can do as little or as much as you would like’.
