Befriending Drogheda is a new service being offered to the elderly in conjunction with the other services on offer such as Care and Repair, Computer Classes and Good Morning Drogheda. It will match older people with suitable volunteers who will visit them on a regular basis. Our volunteer Befrienders are trained and Garda vetted to provide a confident visit in the surroundings of a person’s own home. Our volunteer befrienders will visit, for an hour a week as a friend who will be a companion who will listen to and talk about items of interest to the elderly. Volunteers take you on short trips and assist you when attending events. The volunteers will also act as an advocate for the issues and needs of the elderly and will have the best interests at heart. An example of this would be giving advice on keeping well and warm. Our befriending volunteers will be supported through training and have ongoing contact with the coordinator.
DDS4OP offers services such as Care and Repair. Volunteers help senior citizens with small jobs and repairs around their homes and gardens at no cost for example fitting smoke alarms, grass cutting and garden maintenance.
Another service available for the elderly is computer classes. There is no age limit on learning about the internet and so computer classes are available on a one-to-one basis. In this age of technology it is a great advantage to be able to use the internet, skype and emailing. It is another means by which the elderly can keep in contact with friends and relations abroad.
