We were delighted to discover that one of our most successful local businesses has developed a great tradition of volunteering and contributing to local charities. This year, Matthews Coaches is the main sponsor of the exciting 'Santa Run' in Dundalk that will raise much needed funds for many local charities. In addition to this, with Dundalk's retailers struggling with the effects of cut-backs, this is going to bring 4000 people and their family and friends to the area and put Dundalk back on the map. They are also co-sponsoring the festival of lights, happening at the end of November.
But what you may not know is that these are only a couple of the initiatives being supported by the company and that the staff in Matthews have developed a culture of philantrophy. Every Christmas the staff at Matthews collect food and toys and donate them to St. Vincent De Paul, a tradition initiated by bus driver Con Haneffy. The picture to the right shows some of what they collected last year.
Another example of their culture of giving was last years 'Euro for Pounds', a competition to lose weight before Christmas. Four drivers took part and donated €50 each to the prize fund which Matthews then matched. €200 was to go to the winning drivers chosen charity and €200 was to go to the winning driver. However the winner John Sharkey (pictured below receiving his award from Paddy Matthews) was generous enough to donate the total prize and €400 to SOSAD.
We here at the volunteer centre would like to say well done to all and we look forward to hearing more about the great work being done by Matthews in the future!
